Introduction
The EM-Tec top reference holders ensure the same focus conditions for the SEM and same take-off angle for the X-ray analysis system the for all mounts in the holder. They have been designed for SEM/EDS/WDS analysis on multiple metallographic and petrographic mounts. The top reference holders for a single mount eliminate unwanted tilt effect which is useful for precise quantitative analysis and for EBSD analysis. The metallographic mounts are placed against three reference lips and secured with screws from the side. The reference lips are only 1mm thick and bevelled to reduce X-ray analysis interference. The multiple mount top reference holders are intended for the larger analytical SEMs with a large SEM stage. Made from vacuum grade aluminium with stainless steel screws. One of the positions can be used to hold a calibration standard with pure elements and/or known compounds.
The top reference holders for metallographic or petrographic mounts or embeddings are available in 5 sizes:
- Ø25mm / Ø1” mounts
- Ø30mm / Ø1-1/4” mounts
- Ø40mm or Ø1-1/2” mounts
- Ø50mm / 2” mounts
- 49 x 89mm large rectangular block mount>
EM-Tec top reference holders for Ø25mm and Ø1” mounts
For the standard 25mm and 1” mounts the available top reference holders can hold 1, 2, 4 or 6 mounts. The holders for 2 and 4 mounts can also be used without the base part if height of the holder is a limiting factor in the SEM. The top reference holders with a base part include set screws in the base to push the top surface of the mount flat against the reference lips. If reduced height metallographic mounts or thin samples are used in the top references holders for 1, 2 or 4 mounts, Ø25mm spacer discs can be used under the mount. Pushing from the base allows for small angle adjustment if the polished surfaces of mounts are not perfectly perpendicular to the sides.

If reduced height metallographic mounts or thin samples are used, Ø32mm spacer discs can be used to ensure that the mounts are pushed against the reference lips. Pushing from the base allows for small angle adjustment if the polished surfaces of mounts are not perfectly perpendicular to the sides. The EM-Tec R2 and R2-1.5 top reference holders include two positions for calibration standards mounted on a standard 12.7mm pin stub.

The holders for 2 of the Ø50mm / Ø2” can also be used without the base part if height is a limiting factor in the SEM. The top reference holder with a base part include set screws in the base to push the top surface of the mount flat against the reference lips If reduced height metallographic mounts or thin samples are used, Ø32mm spacer discs can be used to ensure that the mounts are pushed against the reference lips. Pushing from the base allows for small angle adjustment if the polished surfaces of mounts are not perfectly perpendicular to the sides. The EM-Tec R5 top reference holder includes two positions for calibration standards mounted on a standard 12.7mm pin stub.
